New rules for chemical products

From this year new regulations for signs and labelling of chemical products in laboratories and workshops will come into force on 1 June this year. The new regulations are of concern to a number of departments and divisions in LiU.

The new rules laid down by the Swedish Work Environment Authority have come about in order to conform to the joint EU legislation  (CLP Legislation) and come into effect on 1 June 2015.

New regulations for the labelling of gas bottles

Warning signs for gas bottles must from 1 June, 2015 be CLP hazard pictograms with the text gas under tryck (gas under pressure). For more information see the Laboratory Safety Manual.
Here you can also find the basics of how to write adhesive labels for gas bottles and signs for storage spaces yourself. Simple adhesive stickers/labels may also be obtained free from the Environment and Security Office. See contact details at bottom of page.

New regulations for labelling pipes

All visible piping containing gas under pressure and all piping containing hazardous chemical products should from 1 June 2015 be labelled with a CLP hazard pictogram. From 1 June 2017, and not before, an employer who does not label pipes in this way can be made to pay a contingent fine. For more information see the Laboratory Safety Manual.

New regulations for signs for storage of chemicals

Rooms and cupboards and similar places where chemicals are stored should have signs warning of chemical hazard. A new clarification states that the storage place must have a sign when the labelling of the individual containers cannot be read from outside.

Signs warning of chemical hazards should be CLP hazard pictograms. The new regulations come into effect 1 June 2015. The current yellow and black triangle warning sign may, however, be kept until 1 June 2019 if it bears the same symbol as the corresponding hazard pictogram. For more information see the Laboratory Safety Manual.

New regulations for labelling chemicals

All containers of chemical products/substances must be labelled with the name of the product and a CLP pictogram. Purchased containers labelled according to the old system (with orange and black hazard symbol) must be re-labelled by 1 June 2019. For more information see the Laboratory Safety Manual.
