Electrical safety and fire protection

Electrical equipment must be used always in a safe manner. Equipment that is used in a laboratory may require a high-power supply. It is for this reason important to make sure that the equipment in use is dimensioned for the load applied to it. Freestanding electrical installations are to be avoided as far as possible.

In cases in which it is, even so, necessary to use cable from a cable winder, it is to be unrolled to its complete length before use, in order to prevent excess heat being produced.

Multipoint extension cables must not be placed lying on a work bench or on the floor where there is a risk of spillage, or in locations in which heavier-than-air gases can collect. They should instead be mounted on a wall or equivalent.

Note that the fire protection class must be considered when electrical equipment is used within a classified region. See the information pertaining to hazardous area classification.

Electrical equipment that is used in laboratories is to be inspected and maintained as specified in the manufacturer’s instructions or procedures that have been drawn up locally. Damaged equipment must be exchanged or repaired.

Guidance

On the website of the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency there is information on the regulations , as wells as guidelines, that apply within the fire prevention field (in Swedish).

In KLARA (chemical handling system) there is information on chemical products and safety datasheets that can be downloaded. There are also risk assessment templates.

Flammable goods in laboratories must be handled in accordance with this  information from Swedish Civil Contingency Agency (in Swedish).
