What to do if your computer becomes infected

In an emergency situation in which you have been hit by a virus or ransomware, proceed as follows:

Student

The following applies to a computer that you own:

  • Disconnect from networks. Many viruses spread by e-mail or over a network in other ways. By disconnecting your computer from networks, you may prevent further spread.
  • Attempt to use your antivirus program to clean the computer. If this doesn’t work, try downloading one of the free programs offered by antivirus companies.
  • If you cannot remove the virus, you may have to reinstall everything on your computer from scratch.

Co-worker

Co-workers at LiU can obtain support from the IT Division.

  • Disconnect from networks. Many viruses spread by e-mail or over a network in other ways. By disconnecting your computer from networks, you may prevent further spread.
  • Do not switch off the computer. The reason for this is to make diagnosis easier, and to prevent a virus that has been programmed to carry out commands during start-up of the computer performing these commands.
  • Contact the Helpdesk at the IT Division for support.

Contact IRT in the event of any difficulties

Never hesitate to contact the IT security unit at LiU (IRT) if you are the target of, for example, attempted fraud, phishing or a virus infection. We are fully aware that sometimes things simply go wrong, and we want to help you minimise any damage or problems that arise.
