Two-step verification required to log in

Two-step verification will be activated for LiU accounts* during 2020. This measure will increase security when logging in to LiU accounts off-campus, and will help to prevent accounts being compromised or misused.

Two-step verification requires that you confirm your identity with the aid of an app in a mobile phone when logging in to our IT services. The services that will require two-step verification will initially include email, Lisam, Sharepoint collaboration, and components of the Office suite accessed by web browser. Verification is not required when logging in to the computer itself.

Can I activate two-step verification now?

Yes, you can. A guide giving instructions for two-step verification is available MinIT. You need to be connected to LiU's network either on-site on campus, or by turning on and connecting via FortiClient VPN to do it remotely.

Please watch the videos below in preparation.

Why is LiU introducing two-step verification?

LiU receives every day huge numbers of phishing attempts by email. There emails seek to discover usernames and passwords. If you are targeted by a phishing attempt, two-step verification will protect you in most situations. Even if someone discovers your password, it will not be possible to log in to your account when two-step verification is active, since it is necessary to verify the log in process when it takes place on an external unit or outside of the LiU wired or wireless networks.

When two-step verification is active, you will receive a message to an app in your mobile phone to confirm your identity. You use the app to do this, and are then logged in to the network where you can use the services as usual. Right-click in the image and choose "Open image in new tab" to see a larger version.

When will two-step verification be introduced?

Following the incident with phishing June 24 2020, it is now possible for all employees to activate two-step verification on their own. The layout of the introduction below may be revised.

The process will be introduced successively by department during 2020. Information will be published on Inside LiU and through heads of department about the timetable for introductions. You will also receive an email to your own address (from utskick@liu.se) when it time for your department.

When your department is to undergo activation, you will have a period of 14 days to activate two-step verification. Choose a time that is suitable for you. The guide for you to follow will become visible in MinIT when your department is scheduled. You will be informed about this by email.

Two-step verification will be automatically activated for your account after 14 days if you do not complete the process as specified by the guide in MinIT. In this case, you will receive email with information about how to complete the activation.

What should I do?

Use the guide in MinIT to activate two-step verification for your account.

You will have to select certain options based on your situation, and this is why the IT Division cannot carry out a universal activation for all co-workers.

Here's how the activation works (log in with you LiU id to play video):

Note to the video: In addition to activating on-site on campus, you can now also use FortiClient VPN remotely.

What happens when I have activated two-step verification?

When you have performed the procedure described in the guide and successfully activated two-step verification, the new verification procedure will be linked to your LiU account. When you are off-campus and log in to our IT services, you will be required to confirm your identity with the aid of an app in a mobile phone. The services that will require two-step verification will initially be those of Office365, i.e. email, Lisam, Sharepoint collaboration, and components of the Office suite accessed by web browser, etc.

You will be informed during the log in procedure when you need to confirm your identity. Make sure that notifications are enabled in the verification app, in order to allow it to inform you that you must confirm your identity.
