Nordic Centre in Shanghai, China

Nordic Centre (NC) in Shanghai is a collaboration between China and 27 institutions in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden including Linköping University. Located at Fudan University, one of Asia's top universities, Nordic Centre has served as a vehicle for research and education within all kinds of disciplines since 1995 betweeen researchers and students in the five Nordic countries and China.

The Nordic Centre serves as:

  • A platform for initiating and developing research and educational programmes, conferences, and workshops of mutual interest to Nordic and Chinese scholars.
  • A teaching institution for Chinese students and scholars who study the Nordic countries, and for Nordic students and scholars pursuing study of China.
  • An organiser of programmes and courses for the Nordic business community in Shanghai.


Summer courses for Nordic students from member universities

Every summer, NC organizes two summer courses for students at member universities, each lasting two weeks and featuring a mix of lectures and excursions to professional environments such as consulates and company headquarters.

Cost and credits

There is no tuition fee, but participating students must pay 1200 RMB in a participation fee to cover various expenses, plus their own travel and accommodation. Upon completion of a paper after the course, students are granted 5 ECTS academic credits.

Application to the summer course

  • Download and fill in the application form.
  • Send the application form in WORD/OPEN OFFICE format before April 20th, 2020 to Zhe Yang (zhe.yang@liu.se) at International Office.
  • LiU as a member university of NC is offered three spots in total for summer courses.  The principal rule for a selection is "first come first served".   If there are more than three applicants, other applicants will be put on a waiting list, in case other member universities don't nominate three. Selection result will be sent out after May 5th, 2020. 


funding for researchers at member universities

  • Funding applications for research stays in Shanghai for researchers at our Nordic member universities, and for Fudan scholars’ stays in the Nordic Region.  Researchers can apply for this “research platform funding” at any time by sending an email to the Nordic Centre programme manager. 

  • Funding applications for academic events (up to 7,000 euros) e.g. organize a workshop, course or other academic event at NC.  Applications can be sent before March 15th or before September 15th.  Applications will be evaluated one month after the submission at the council meeting held in the spring or the autumn respectively.

  • Funding applications to host a biannual conference (up to 20,000 euros) in any academic field in Shanghai.  Next application opens in spring 2021 for hosting a biannual conference in 2022.
